How to Replace Brake Pads and Rotors on Jeep Wrangler JK

Replacing the brake pads and rotors on a car takes some time to work on.  But for Jeep enthusiasts like Dave, this is a fun project.  The video shows detail steps of how this is done on the Jeep Wrangler JK.  Here are some high level steps.

1.  Lift the Jeep up and take the tire off.

2.  Compress the caliper piston then remove the caliper from the brake.

3.  Remove the caliper, and unmount the caliper bracket to prepare to install the new brake pads.

4.  Use a wire brush to keep the rust from the old rotor.  This helps to get the rotor off easier.

5.  Use the brake cleaner to clean the brakes.

6.  Take the guide pins from the caliper bracket.  Use a paper towel to clean the old grease off.  Check the rubber boots to make sure they are in good shape and clean them also.

7.  Use the caliper grease to the pins and the bracket hole, then slide the pin back to the hole.  Make sure the pin can move freely.  Do not over apply the grease.

8.  Take the old brake pads out.  Remove the clips also.

9.  Use a wire brush to clean the caliper bracket.  Then apply the grease to the where the clips are.

10.  Change to new gloves.  Put the new clips on and put the new brake pads on.  Be careful not the let the grease to get on to the brake pads.

11.  Use brake cleaner to clean the brake pads to make sure no grease is on.

12.  Get the new rotor ready.  Make sure you get the right one to the right tire.  Use the brake cleaner to clean off any grease.

13.  Put the new rotor on the tire stud.  

14.  Put the caliper bracket with the new brake pads back on.

15.  Use red threadlocker when tightening the bolt.

16.  Use the torque ranch to torque to the right foot lb on the bolts.

17.  Put the caliper back on over the new pads.  Put more red threadlocker to the bolts and make sure they are secured with a torque ranch.

18.  One more final bath with the brake cleaner to make sure the new rotor and brakes is free of grease. 

19.  Put the tire back on and do this for all tires!

20.  Pump up the brake paddle to pump gas out from the caliper to make sure it's firm.

21.  Follow instruction to perform break in procedure on the new brake pads.

22.  All done!
